The Classic Pamela Positive: “God Is Awake” – Victor Hugo

“When you have laboriously accomplished your daily tasks, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.”

– Victor Hugo

Mr. Hugo points to our American culture for sure: We work and work and work. We are a productive country, a do-er people. Even though lately we have so many inefficiencies in government and programs, as individuals, we ‘do.’

And so we must pause. We must reflect. We realize when we lay our heads gently down for rest, that God is watching.

She is caring and loving. He is standing guard. This loving Principle may even be shaping our thoughts so that we awake refreshed. We can start the day with greater clarity and positive purpose than the day before.

Work…Rest…Trust God…

And so we live Life fully.

Victor Hugo (1802 – 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist. He is considered as one of the most well-known French Romantic writers. In France, Hugo’s literary fame comes first from his poetry. Among many volumes, Les Contemplations and La Légende des siècles stand particularly high in critical esteem. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and Notre-Dame de Paris, 1831 (known in English as The Hunchback of Notre-Dame).  Les Miserables focused on social issues of the time, and helped bring these to wider attention. Hugo was married to a childhood friend, Adele Foucher, and they had five children.

The Classic Pamela Positive: Do You Have Enough Green Light in Your Life?

Try to use all the natural light that comes to us from our earth. Green light is light from the sun, and not fluorescent bulbs.

In fact, I’d even go so far to say that what a wonderful world it would be if we operated based on when our day was light — and our night was dark.  Our body rhythms would be in tune with this natural course of living. Perhaps light is sending us a message of when we should work, engage with  people, and when we should sleep, rest, rejuvenate.

The Pamela Positive: Arianna Huffington Shares the Value of Sleep

I believe in balance and try to practice it.  No job can be everything to anyone…. it’s important to have outside lives and interests.  This is what makes us a whole, fully giving person.  And when we return to our work we are more energized and inspired!

In my life, family is #1 for me.  I need to and want to take care of my mom, my dad, my sister and brother-in-law’s kids.  Secondly, I adore Improv!   Exploring different characters, connecting with others on stage, and following the wisdom of listening and intuition is so thrilling. It makes me a better person and communicator, as well being fun.  And in many ways, this balance is rest, too.

So in order to be rested, I think it is certainly sleep and taking care that we are not overloaded. Balance is also being energized in doing other activities.

At a recent TED talk, Arianna Huffington emphasized the importance of taking care of ourselves.  She spoke about how getting enough sleep will change our lives, and enable us to change the world.  Having rest, sleep, regeneration, rejuvenation, is so important to being the best selves we can be.  View Arianna’s speech here.

The Pamela Positive: Parenting is 90% Energy…

That’s what Jack Black says, famed comedian, actor, and devoted Dad.  He’s got a good message for us here on kids, and for that matter, for any type of communications we engage in.  Having rest, sleep, regeneration, rejuvenation, is so important to being the best selves we can be:

“The more sleep I get, the better dad I am.  Parenting is 90% energy if you don’t have it, then there tend to be some lazy TV-watching days with the kids, and that ain’t getting it done.  A great day with them—my sons are 4 and 2—is an energized adventure into the world.”
