The Definition of Philanthropy, from Mary Baker Eddy
“Philanthropy is loving, ameliorative, revolutionary”
What a grand call on philanthropy from this 19th century author and spiritual leader. Philanthropy is loving – but also corrective. It ensures success. It keeps us unselfish, and even uncovers evil. And the goodness itself, the kind love of giving — not a placard on a building, not a name on a brochure — is the greatest gift.
“Mankind must learn that evil is not power. Its so called despotism is but a phase of nothingness. [We should] promote affection and virtue in families and therefore in the community.” —Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health
Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was the founder of Christian Science. She was a spiritual teacher and author of multiple books, including Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She founded the Christian Science Publishing Company, in 1898 at the age of 77, which publishes The Christian Science Monitor (founded when Eddy was 87) and The Christian Science Sentinel.
